What’s next after graduation?
The design show is over, you’ve made some great contacts, what next?
I graduated from Nottingham Trent University in 2009. It has been an interesting journey in the industry which has taken me abroad, working with international brands and designer fashion labels. This is an exciting time starting on a new chapter.
Three of my top tips for stepping into the industry
- The number one way I would recommend getting into the industry I would recommend is ensuring that you get found. I ensured that my CV was loaded onto many sites. I have particularly found CV-Library useful for getting noticed by recruiters. Optimise your CV for searches and update it often.
- The next way is to go on the hunt, the best way would be to build your network by attending business networking events like 4Networking and getting recommendations from your contacts.
- Lastly, apply to roles advertised on specialist design sites such as Design Week. Consider revising your portfolio to make it as strong as possible, there is always room for improvement. Review job adverts and use the description to tailor your portfolio to each role that you apply for. Consider creating new work to add to your portfolio.
I will be adding more posts about techniques you can use to stand out from your CV design, covering letters to elevator pitches. I will also be posting interviews with established designers. Sign up as a member to be kept up to date with posts.
